Gombe varsity, ASUU bicker over resuming academic activities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University (GSU) chapter have rejected the decision of the management to resume academic activities today.

The GSU management had on Thursday, in an internal memo signed by the Deputy Registrar (Academics), Musa Sarki, directed first-year students to report to their respective departments today to complete their registration.

The memo said stakeholders had agreed that the students be allowed to hold their matriculation and complete the first semester for the 2021/2022 academic session.

However, a statement signed yesterday by the branch Chairman of ASUU, Dr Suleiman Salihu Jauro, and Secretary, Mohammed Garba Ndogu, said lecturers would continue with the nationwide strike embarked by the national body of the union since February 14.

The union argued that the GSU bye-laws only vested the Senate with the powers to approve the calendar for the commencement and end of academic activities of the university, “And this has not happened in the university as of today.”

“Lecturers under the auspices of ASUU GSU chapter will not partake in any academic activities until the current national roll-over strike action is vacated,” the statement said.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mohammed Sammani Abubakar, could not be reached on phone yesterday.

But a top official of the institution told our correspondent on the phone that the management stood by its earlier decision that the students should resume academic activities unfailingly as announced.
