Gombe State Government has shut down all the 29 private colleges of health technology in the state.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr Habu Dahiru, disclosed this to newsmen after the state executive council meeting, presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Wednesday.

He said the colleges were shut over issues ranging from lack of registration and accreditation from relevant authorities.

According to him, the proliferation of the colleges in the state is worrisome, alleging that most of them don’t have licenses, adequate manpower, befitting laboratories, libraries and facilities among others.

“Most of the graduates of such institutions find it difficult to secure jobs, especially in government health facilities, due to ‘their non accreditation’ status. That is why the government decided to suspend their operations until they are thoroughly appraised and found worthy to operate.

“In fact some of them are not registered, lack manpower and are not certified to practise. Therefore, we suspended their operation and a committee was set up to look into the issues before reopening them,” he alleged.

He added that the decision was aimed at checkmating quackery and bring sanity in the state’s health sector.

Dr Dahiru further explained that after the appraisal exercise, those that scale through will be reopened while those that are not up to standards will be permanently shutdown.
