Gombe govt bans cattle movement, night grazing

The Gombe State government has banned the inter-state and intra-state movement of cattle, under-aged cattle rearing and night grazing by herdsmen in the state, until the end of January 2023.

The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Mohammed Magaji Gettado disclosed this to newsmen at the end of the state Executive Council, presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

He explained that the council banned the movement as part of measures to forestall the possibility of farmers/herder clashes, which usually occur during the harvest of farm produce.

He said in view of some natural factors that affected food production across the country this year, it becomes pertinent for the state government to put in place measures that will help to safeguard farm produce.

According to him, from the last week of October until the end of January 2023, “The state government has banned inter-local government, inter-states, under-age and night grazing of cattle and bush burning.”

Gettado added that an expanded security meeting will be convened by Governor Yahaya to fine-tune understanding among critical stakeholders.

The commissioner also appealed to farmers not to burn the remnants of their farms in the spirit of the African brotherhood, to allow cattle graze at the end of the ban.

On his part, the Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Muhammad Gambo Magaji, said the council has approved the procurement of 40 buses, for the state-owned transport company, Gombe State Transport Service, (Gombe Line).
