Gombe gov inaugurates grazing reserves committee

Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya Thursday inaugurated a 27-member committee to assess grazing, forest and game reserves as well as cattle routes in the state.

Inaugurating the committee at the Government House, the governor said the committee demonstrated his administration’s commitment towards environmental restoration to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Governor Yahaya said the encroachment of these land had posed serious threats to their existence, threatening ecological balance and the livelihoods of both farmers and herders.

He said, “In northern Nigeria today, deforestation and encroaching desertification are driving nomadic communities inwards, thus bringing them into conflict with farming communities, and jeopardising centuries of inter-communal harmony and stability.

“To address those security challenges, we must first address their root causes which is environmental degradation that is fuelled by climate change and lack of compliance with extant rules and regulations across all divides.”

Daily Trust reports that the committee will be chaired by AIG Zubairu Halilu Mu’azu (rtd), with Barrister Ibrahim Hussain as Legal Adviser and Rabiu Abubakar as Secretary.
