Gombe farmer counts millions through tomato, pepper farming

Saleh Maikudi, the chairman of Vegetables Farmers’ Association in Bula Community, Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State, has become a millionaire through the cultivation of tomatoes and peppers. At just 35-years of age, Maikudi has transformed his financial situation, earning over N7 million annually from his farming efforts.

In a recent interview, Maikudi shared insights into his journey from a modest farmer to a thriving agricultural entrepreneur. He cultivates 30 hectares of land each year, focusing primarily on tomatoes and various types of peppers. His success in vegetable farming has not only elevated his financial status but has also highlighted the profitability of investing in these crops.

Weekend Trust gathered that in 2023, Maikudi invested approximately N1.5 million in the cultivation of his farmland. This strategic investment paid off significantly, as he reaped a return of N7 million.

“I spent N1.5 million on preparing and planting the vegetables, and from that, I earned N7 million,” Maikudi said. His farm produces a diverse range of vegetables, including tomatoes, bell peppers (Tatashe), chili peppers, cayenne peppers (Shombo), and scotch bonnets (hot peppers).

He explained that these crops typically require about 10 weeks from planting to harvesting, with the harvest period itself extending for another 10 weeks.

As the wet season progresses, farmers in the region have started harvesting their produce. Off-takers from various states across Nigeria are  thronging the community to purchase the vegetables, which are in high demand. Maikudi expressed satisfaction with the moderate rainfall this year, which has contributed to a bountiful harvest.

“If market conditions remain favourable this year, I expect to earn at least N10 million, as my vegetables have done very well,” Maikudi added.

Looking towards the future, Maikudi urged the government to construct a modern market in the community to standardise the sale of vegetables and other agricultural products.

He also recommended the establishment of mini-processing factories to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance food security, and create more job opportunities for the youth in Gombe State.
