Amina Wilfred returned 13 over par over 54 holes at the first TYB Ladies Amateur Open Championship to emerge the winner of the championship.

Wilfred not only emerged the winner of the Championship but also became the latest world amateur golf ranked Nigerian amateur lady golfer.

In effect, she will now be seeded in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), making her the only Nigerian ranked amateur lady golfer right now internationally.

Speaking at the dinner and awards ceremony after the 3-day event which was held at the TYB Golf Course in Abuja, Wilfred, who is a personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, expressed joy on her achievement.

“I want to thank Almighty, my sponsors, the Inspector-General of Police, for giving me the support and my competitors for giving me a good challenge. They are the reason for my victory,” she said.

Other notable winners include Moses Idoko who won the Male Category 1 (0-14) with the Best Gross while Prince David won Best Net and Rose Abus Nyam (Handicap 22) won Best Net, Day 2.

TYB Ladies Amateur Open Championship

Asides from trophies and medals, Wilfred and other winners of several categories went home with additional prizes in form of television sets, air-conditioners, refrigerators etc. Sponsors, including Transcorp Hilton Abuja, were also appreciated with awards.

Commenting on the tournament, Ifeanyi Nnadi, Assistant Public Relations and Marketing Manager, Transcorp Hilton Abuja, stated that the sponsorship is in line with the organisation’s corporate objective of strategically engaging in mutually beneficial partnerships, especially in sports and entertainment.

“Hilton International has always been a promoter of sports, and recently just renewed its official sponsorship for F1 racing and the Ryders cup.

“In the same vein, Transcorp Hilton Abuja has a history of promoting and supporting sports in Nigeria for over two decades, including several golf tournaments and are glad to be a sponsor at this 1st edition, an event which was well planned, full of great plays, fun and well-executed.

“Having just recently hosted the global press conference of international boxing superstar; Floyd Mayweather and previously hosting the UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, we were also excited to be a part of this 3-day event, connecting with other stakeholders and more importantly showcasing to the lady golfers and the tournament winner (who gets an all-expense paid weekend stay for two people), a bit of our hospitality at Transcorp Hilton Abuja.”

Speaking with the media, Lady Captain Susan Marcus, commended the Life Patron TY Buratai, the various sponsors and partners for their immense support.

“I am so happy, the support I got to host this first event of ours was overwhelming.

“I want to thank our Life Patron, His Excellency Lt Gen TY Buratai (Rtd), the LGAN family, members of our great club, as well as our wonderful sponsors for making this tournament a success,” she said.

The 3-day event was filled with activities including practice rounds, the tournament proper, barbecue night, a cocktail party and dinner which culminated in the presentation of the tournament trophy.
