The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi has appealed to contractors working on federal roads to resume work or risk termination of their contract.
The minister made the appeal Thursday during a meeting with contractors, stating that the government is working to resolve the debt it has accrued over the years due to subsidy removal and forex unification.
While stating that the debt, which is in the tune of N1.5trn has been reported to the president and the National Assembly, Umahi stated that verification needed to be conducted on the debt to be able to defend it while making case for the release of the funds.
“I want you to take this verification seriously because N1.5trn, which is said to be the debt, is not a joke. So, it is very important we do this. Let me appeal to all the contractors to go back to site, especially Lokoja to Benin, we have done the scoping and reviewed the contracts and sent them to BPP. But if you can’t start based on trust, we will take the contract from you.”

He added that the revocation is on the basis of the contractors stating they have money to start the projects when they signed it.
He said the government can’t lose the current dry season to fix some of the roads that are in need of repairs.
