Germany has indicated interest in gas supply from Nigeria, a move that will boost Nigeria’s quest to expand its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market into Europe.
Germany is Europe’s biggest gas user and Russia’s most important customer and is said to be at the forefront of European Union members planning to reduce natural gas imports from Russia because of the sour political relations between Russia and the EU.
A visiting German trade delegation expressed the country’s burgeoning desire for Nigeria’s gas when they paid a visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu in Abuja on Thursday.
A statement by Ohi Alegbe, spokesman for the NNPC said the large contingent of the German business concerns was led by Vice Minister for Economic Affairs & Energy and Member of the German Parliament, Uwe Beckmeyer.
Beckmeyer said the country was seeking development of business relationship to accelerate the supply of LNG especially in the country’s ship building industry.
According to Mr. Beckmeyer, Nigeria’s LNG would come in handy as the country and other European industrial powers seek to cut down drastically on carbon dioxide emissions arising from heavy industrial operations since LNG is far friendlier to the environment.
