Gender bills: Women raise affirmative action demand to 70%

A cross-section of women yesterday increased their demands on the inclusion of women in politics and governance from 35 to 70%.

The women, operating The True Democrats (TTD), however, lauded the National Assembly for its move to reconsider some of the women’s bills that were thrown out recently.

The convener of TTD, Bob Ofunne, in a statement said they were utterly dismayed when the lawmakers rejected the women’s bills.

According to her, it was obvious that women’s representation in governance in Nigeria was at its lowest level and the rights of women are daily trampled upon by some repressive traditional laws that must be changed.
