Gender-based violence rising in Kano – CITAD

A non-governmental organization, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), has expressed concern over statistics in Kano which indicate that gender-based violence is high in the state.

The organization said the statistics about the increase in gender-based violence in Kano has grown into alarming proportion hence the need for all hands to be on deck to combat the menace. 

The Gender Programme Officer of the centre, Zainab Aminu, raised the concern while addressing newsmen in Kano.

According to her, data collected in February through the Centre’s GBV Mobile App, showed the persistent occurrence of gender-based violence, most especially a high number of sexual harassment.

“In comparison with the data obtained in previous months, GBV cases are still being perpetrated. Fifteen cases were reported via our GBV App for the month of February which includes rape, sexual harassment, wife battering among others.”

On its part, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Kano Zonal office, reiterated its commitment to collaborate with CITAD to raise awareness and fight sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the state.
