The Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has waded into the protracted negotiations between the federal government and the organised labour over a strike planned for Monday.
At an emergency meeting with the labour leadership led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Ayuba Wabba on Sunday, the Speaker appealed to labour to shun its strike meant as protest against hikes in fuel and electricity costs.
“I want to specifically thank you for honoring this meeting, we had hoped that the series of meetings you had with the Ministry of Labour,” he said.
On his part, Wabba while addressing journalists after the meeting said that, they had a crucial discussion with the Speaker and his team and are hoping that, the discussions will be carried forward for action.
“We have discussed with the leadership of the House of Representatives. We have shared our concerns and the challenges with him, especially the very challenging issue of the implication of the hike in electricity tariff. We have also told him about how the discussion with the federal government went and how the meeting was adjourned.
“If the issues are not addressed, you are aware that, we have given a notice, that notice will certainly expire by tomorrow (Monday). All the actions we pronounced will actually take place,” he said.
