The Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said the media needs to promote unity for the overall progress of the country by releasing contents devoid of hatred or unethical practices.

He and other personalities made the call in separate remarks during the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) executives in Abuja on Saturday.

He advised the new executives to work with other media establishments to ensure that the industry plays its traditional role of leading the way in protecting public interest for nation building.

At the event, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, lamented that the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) had been having a running battle with some broadcast stations for airing items capable of raising tension and promoting disunity in the country.

In his remark, the publisher of the ThisDay newspaper and chairman, Arise Television, Nduka Obaigbena, said Nigeria was in a very challenging time, which needed sacrifices to ensure peace and stability towards development.

The director-general of the NBC, Balarabe Shehu Illelah, commended the BON for the transition from analogue to digital terrestrial television broadcasting, as well as providing content.

The newly sworn in chairman, John Ugbe, and his vice, Dr Mansur Liman, promised to bring in their experiences to ensure professionalism in the broadcast industry.
