The defeat came just a day after former African champions Funke Oshonaike and Segun Toriola who are representing Akwa Ibom were knocked out in the mixed doubles quarter-final by Team Oyo which had the duo of Ajala Fumilola and 56-year-old Taofeeq Maya in action on Sunday.

Aregbesola against all odds expectedly was overjoyed at the feat she has achieved.

She couldn’t believe she had beaten one of the best tennis players in Nigeria, added that she was aiming for the gold medal.

“I couldn’t believe I will beat Funke. I was confident at the beginning but I lost hope as the game progressed. I just listened to my coach and teammates cheering me on to pull my last point.

“This is my first participation at the NSF, and I am aiming for the gold medal,” she said as fans hurried to celebrate with her.
