Nine policemen have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly plotting industrial action in the Force.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, approved the dismissal of the policemen in a signal issued by the Commissioner of Police Provost, Force headquarters, Abuja, following their orderly room trial.

The signal was addressed to some police commands and formations across the country.

Policemen had threatened to go on strike over non-implementation of a 20 per cent salary increase approved by the Federal Executive Council in December 2021.

The salary upgrade was expected to take effect in January 2022.

After the news of the planned strike spread, the IGP cautioned officers and men of the Force to jettison the industrial action or be ready to face the consequences.

He gave the warning while addressing men of the force at the Bompai Headquarters of the Police Command in Kano on March 24, saying such action was “tantamount to mutiny.”

Baba also sent members of the management team to various commands and formations to pacify the police personnel and promised to fast track the payment of the salary increase.

In the signal approving the dismissal of the nine cops, the police also directed the affected personnel be “de-kitted” and their names removed from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system with effect from April 1, 2022.

The cops were reportedly tracked through their telephone conversations and consequently arrested.
