A former lawmaker represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political office holders to make personal sacrifices to cushion the effect of rising fuel prices.
On Wednesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) raised the pump price of fuel from N897 per litre to N1, 030 in Abuja; from N855 to N998 in Lagos; N1, 070 in North-East; N1,025 in other South-West states; N1,045 in South-East and N1,075 in South-South.
This had triggered reactions among Nigerians who asked Tinubu to work towards reversing the increment.
Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), had asked if increasing pump price is what the Tinubu administration lives for.
Weighing in on the conversation on Thursday, Sani said the sacrifices of fuel price hike should not be shouldered by the poor masses alone.
The former lawmaker spoke at the 64th Baptist Ministers Conference in Kaduna.
“We are a nation of 224 million people, and we cannot ignore the serious economic challenges facing the masses. The President, Ministers, Governors, Senators, and those in authority must lead by making sacrifices to move the nation forward,” he said.
Reverend Israel Akanji, President of the Nigerian Baptist Conference, echoed similar sentiments, urging the government to manage the pace of economic reforms to ease the burden on citizens.
He called for relief in fuel prices, stating that lower fuel costs would positively affect food prices, rent, and school fees.
Also, Reverend Joseph Hayab, former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) pointed out that while progress had been made in the fight against terrorism, the ongoing threat of kidnapping and violence continues to haunt the country.
He urged the government to take decisive action to eliminate all terrorists and restore peace and security for the people.
