FRSC records 2.58% reduction in deaths, 7.28% in road crashes for 2017

Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi has announced that the total number of people killed in road crashes for 2017 was 4,410 which represents 2.58 percent reduction of people killed as against 4,527 in 2016.

Speaking Monday in Abuja during a press briefing on updates of the special ember months patrol activities, he said 2017 also recorded reduction in road crashes with 7,937 representing 7.28 percent  as against 8,560 which was recorded in 2016.

He also announced that 26,392 person were injured during road accidents in 2017 as against 26,749 in 2016 hence the corps recorded success in the reduction of road fatalities in 2017.

In the ember month special patrol activities, Oyeyemi stated that a total number of 5,993 peole were involved in various road traffic crashes in 2016 but was reduced to 4,418 in 2017 representing a 28 percent reduction.

He also said that 454 people were killed in 2016 but in 2017, 338 people were killed which shows a reduction 26 percent.

Oyeyemi said 28,224 offenders were booked for various offences in 2016 but in 2017, 20,371 people were booked showing a reduction of 28 percent hence there was the need to increase the fine fees to further discourage motorist from committing offences.

He explained that most commuters freely commit road traffic offences because the fine fees were cheap.

On speed limiting device enforcement, he said the records shows that there is 60 percent complaiance adding that the reduction of the installation price from 35,000 naira to 20,000 naira has encouraged more commuters to comply.
