FRSC cracks down on fake diplomatic, illegal number plates

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has directed an immediate clampdown on vehicles bearing fake diplomatic and unauthorized number plates currently circulating on Nigerian roads.

A statement by Olusegun Ogungbemide, the corps’ public education officer, said these number plates were fraudulently produced by suspected criminals.

Ogungbemide added that they were neither manufactured by the FRSC’s authorised production plants nor issued by the motor licensing authorities of any state.

He said the unauthorised number plates identified include, but are not limited to diplomatic plates, NYCN, Peace Ambassador, NAUS, CYMS, UN-Unity 01, UN-Amb and NANS.

He said to curb the illegal activities, the corps marshal has approved a nationwide tactical enforcement campaign.

The effort, Ogungbemide said, aims to swiftly identify, arrest and impound vehicles displaying the fake number plates or any other unauthorised variants.

He emphasised that such plates are often linked to nefarious and criminal activities and urged the public to report any individuals using the unauthorised plates to law enforcement authorities.

“Vehicle owners currently utilising these fake or unauthorised number plates are hereby warned to cease their use immediately, as offenders will face prosecution,” Ogungbemide also said.
