The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has arrested 222 trailers loaded with 3,169 passengers to avert unprecedented crashes and fatalities on the highways.

The Yobe Sector Commander, FRSC, Dawi David Dantaro, stated this while briefing newsmen on the corps’ preparedness for the 2024 Eid-el-Kabir in Damaturu.

He said the unacceptable behaviour of road users led to the flag-off of the Inter-Agency Joint Task Force (IJTF) to enforce compliance with the use of trailers to convey passengers as well as mitigate road traffic crashes.

Dantaro said the IJTF, which commenced work on March 23, has successfully arrested a total of 222 trailers loaded with 3,169 passengers hanging on top of goods and animals.

He said as part of the operations, the JTF dropped over 2,440 passengers who were mandated to take alternative vehicles designed for conveying passengers, saying the development had adequately tamed the situation on all fronts.

According to him, to achieve and ensure a hitch-free 2024 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the corps has deployed 743 patrol vehicles, 184 administrative vehicles, 92 ambulances, 23 tow trucks and 144 motorbikes across the country.
