A friend of the slain Ummukulsum Sani Buhari (Ummita) has revealed that Geng Quanrong, the Chinese national who murdered her told the deceased that he had converted to Islam so as to convince her to marry him.

Daily Trust reports that Quanrong is currently cooling off in police custody for attacking the 23-year-old at her parents’ residence on Friday. The deceased and Quanrong were lovers.

The deceased, a divorcee, was said to be dating the suspect before she got married earlier this year and the relationship was said to have continued after she divorced her husband.

Speaking to Daily Trust on Monday, Rabia N. Garba, who described herself as the best friend to the deceased, said the suspect was known to them as Frank and that he had told them he adopted Faisal as his name after claiming to have converted to Islam because of Ummita.

“With the little I know of him, he is a person who gets frustrated over silly things. Even late replies while chatting gets him frustrated.

“Well I can say their relationship seemed to be love or a friendship, because the deceased knew she could never marry him. She made all efforts to stop him from falling for her but she later decided to date him because he claimed to convert to Islam.

“He claimed to have converted to Islam for her sake and that was what motivated her to date him. He even said he started learning how to pray,” Garba said.

On the deceased and her relationship with the suspect, Garba said, “She (Ummita) was my best friend, she was a good friend of mine and everyone who came in contact with her said she had good human relations. She got married (to someone else) this year February. But before then, she was not allowed to marry him because her parents and relatives did not truly believe in his faith as he claimed because there was a time we chatted and we found out he was still using his previous name, Frank, despite telling us he was to be known as Faisal.

“Then she ask him why was he still using his old name Frank despite the fact he proclaimed to be Muslim he told her that his name then was Faisal.

“As he told us, when he converted to Islam he was given Faisal as a new name. But I can tell you he was not sincere. For us, we knew him with Frank not Geng. He didn’t tell us about his surname. Almost all of us knew him as Frank not Geng. He told us that he was a business man running his business here in Kwari market.

“He was told to take heart and leave her since there match was not perfect for her family. He agreed to leave her and she later got married and as faith will have it, the marriage did not last long. We never knew he didn’t forsake her. He investigated and found out that she was divorced and she was with her family.

“She often complained to me about him and I suggested that she should forsake him. She told him that he should please leave her.

“There was a time he went through my DM (direct message) on Instagram and told me that he loved her and even when she was at her matrimonial home, but I told him that is not part of our tradition. When she left the house (divorced), he kept on following her. She had it in her mind whatever he was willing to do for her she wouln’t go back to him because she knew that she wouldn’t marry him,” she said.
