Fresh plot in Ogun Assembly as impeached speaker faces suspension

There’s a fresh trouble for the immediate past speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, as a plot to suspend the embattled legislature emerged on Tuesday.

Daily Trust reports that Oluomo was impeached formally last Tuesday by 25 out of 26 members of the assembly.

In his stead, Elemide Oludaisi representing Odeda constituency was elected and inaugurated as the speaker.

Oluomo representing Ifo I constituency had dragged the assembly to the court over his removal which he labelled ‘illegal.’

But on Tuesday, a fresh plot to suspend the embattled legislator emerged at the plenary presided by Elemide.

A member representing Abeokuta North State Constituency, Dr. Babatunde Tella, moved a motion co-sponsored by five other lawmakers, seeking suspension of the former Speaker for 14 (legislative) days.

Tella, who is also the Assembly’s Deputy Chief Whip, said Oluomo had breached Legislative Powers and Privilege Act of 2018 by dragging the assembly to the court without the required three months written notice to the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative House.

According to him, Oluomo’s action is “detrimental to the physical, mental and moral well being of this Honourable House and puts the image of this House in bad light and disrepute.”

While opening debate on the motion, he said “this Honourable House notes with serious concern and dismay the unwholesome attitude of Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo, which is detrimental to the physical, mental and moral well being of this Honourable House and how this attitude is putting the image of this House in bad light and disrepute.

“Further note is the fact that by taking this House to the court of law, he had shown a clear manifestation of an unfriendly disposition and disregard to the laws and statutes guiding the operations of this House.

“Also of note is the Legislative Powers and Privilege act of 2018 section 21 on Pre action notice which states ‘A person who has cause of action against a legislative House shall give a three months written notice to the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative House disclosing the cause of action and relief sought.’

“However, consequent upon the fact that Rt Hon Olakunle Oluomo has refused to follow due process before taking this House to the court of law, he has contravened the laws guiding the operations of this House and deemed guilty as he cannot claim ignorance being a former Speaker of the same House.

“Consequently, having been deemed guilty of the above as there is no record of three months notice being sent to the Office of the Clerk, an action that contravenes the Legislative Powers and Privileges Act 2018.

“I therefore in consonance with ORDER X RULE 71 (4) move that Rt Hon Olakunle Oluomo be suspended from the activity of this Honorable House for 14 legislative days.”

The Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, Adegoke Adeyanju, and two other members, Oluseun Adesanya and Waliu Owode, spoke in support of the motion.

However, the new Speaker stepped down the motion, urging his colleagues to consider the mood of the state as well as the efforts of Governor Dapo Abiodun in addressing the challenges of the state.
