The suspect, a co-butcher with the deceased, reportedly sighted her husband’s mistress at the abattoir and challenged her (new lover) for getting pregnant for the man.
This, it was learnt, led to a heated argument between the deceased and his fourth wife who grabbed a knife and allegedly stabbed the husband in the leg, cutting off a vein.
The husband was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital for first aid and later transferred to Ijebu- Ode General hospital, where he died from ‘excessive bleeding’.
The spokesman of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi told newsmen on Thursday in Abeokuta that following the distress call, the DPO Obalende division, Murphy Salami, led his men to the scene, but the suspect had fled before their arrival.
Oyeyemi said the suspect was subsequently arrested in her hideout at Mobalufon area of Ijebu – Ode.
“On interrogation, the suspect, who happened to be the fourth wife of the deceased, claimed that it was her husband who first slapped her simply because she asked his new wife her mission at her market stand,” Police publicist quoted the suspect as saying.
Oyeyemi said the remains of the husband had been released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rights after an autopsy had been carried out.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun to have ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, for discreet investigation and prosecution.
