Four family members die of food poisoning in Kwara

Four members of a Kwara family have died of food poisoning, a month after 11 members of the same family died after taking a local concoction, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence has confirmed.

The latest incident happened Thursday morning at Olori village in Banni community, Kwara North senatorial district of Kwara state.

The Public Relations Officer of the corps in Kwara, Babawale Afolabi,  said “We received an information about the death of two children of Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar of Olori village, Banni community of Kwara North; Umar Mohammed 25 years and Kadir Mohammed 18 years.

“They started vomiting around 4:00 am on Thursday and were rushed to General hospital, Igbeti, Oyo state.

“They were tested and confirmed to have taken poisonous food.

“After few minutes, the two died in the hospital but as the family members were preparing to bury their corps, one of the grandsons of Abubakar; Umar Mohammed also died”, the PRO added.

He further said “As we were with the family members, we were told another grandson, Bashiru Mohammed has been rushed to another hospital, and on getting there, he was also confirmed dead in our presence.”

The PRO said that the Divisional Officer, Taofeek advised other family members who took the same meal with the deceased, to go for check up at the hospital.

He said that some other members of the family were admitted at the hospital, for proper test and possible treatment to avert undesirable occurrence.

Efforts to reach the TIC chairman of Kaima Local Government where the incident occurred, Suleiman Gado, was not successful as calls to his phone were not picked.

Some of the residents who spoke with Daily Trust however called for vigilance on the issue adding that the two similar incidents within a spate of one month in two separate local governments in Kwara North calls for concern.

“This is worrisome and I think there is need for the authorities to really look into the issue. We lost 11 people in Baruteen to concoction the other day and now four members of the same family again,” Saliu Zakari, a resident of the community said.
