Governor Liyel Imoke presented the cheques through the state Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (CRS NEWMAP) at the official launch of Cross River NEWMAP at Transcorp Hotel, Calabar.
The government intervention is in partnership with the World Bank.
Imoke said the project was important because the state understands its challenges and the opportunities it presents to the affected communities, adding that the partnership with the World Bank has transformed the state’s economy.
He said: “This is a partnership that will help the state to understand the challenges of erosion, be it man-made and not natural. There is need for land management so that we are not bogged back by recurring problems as this takes the community so much to sustain the solution.”
With the contract sum given, the governor cautioned both the contractors and NEWMAP to complete their work before the next rainy season.
