The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar and former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola are to be conferred with honorary degrees by Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, during the fourth and fifth convocation of the institution.
Addressing a press conference on the activities heralding the convocation ceremony which will hold on 29th of March, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashiru Ademola Raji explained that the institution decided to honour the Sultan of Sokoto and Oyinlola because of their impactful contributions to national development.
The VC said the convocation lecture with the tittle: “Religious Tolerance and Challenges of Democratic Governance” would be delivered by Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
The VC reiterated the commitment of the university to providing its students with the best of education and assured that the institution will continue to develop high quality teaching and research.
According to him, the university will graduate a total 350 students in the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 Academic Sessions.
Eleven students made first class, and 102 finished with second class upper honours.
Another 172 made second class lower, and 59 made third class.
The university is also to launch a N5 billion endowment fund to complete the ongoing projects on the campus including the NDIC Science Laboratory, University Health Clinic, the university Central Mosque, reconstruction of the Senate Building, Female Hostel and Perimeter Fencing of the campus.
Professor Basir also said the university has established more academic linkages with sister universities across the globe.
His words “One of the reasons for our quality teaching is the linkage of our teaching to high quality research. Our faculty last year had an average of 3.5 published papers in journals and over 20 on-going active researches in the area of Peace studies and Conflict Resolution; Islamic Banking; Extraction from Indigenous plants among others.”
