Foundation doles out laptops to empower girls

Khalil Suleiman Halilu (KSH) Foundation, a non-profit organization, has given laptops to 15 young girls across the country, to boost their information technology skills.

This was carried out Thursday in Abuja at the foundation’s unveiling/closing ceremony of EveryGirl 2.0 (Girl Connect).

Daily Trust reports that EveryGirl 2.0 (Girl Connect), the second edition of the KSH Foundation flagship program EveryGirl program, is aimed at empowering young women between the ages of 14 to 21 in underserved communities to become internet savvy.

Its primary goal is to educate young women on the utilization of the Internet for continued education, livelihood opportunities, and personal development. This year, EveryGirl recorded the successful participation of 300 young women across the country.

From the pool of 300 participants, 15 exceptional young girls were selected for the immersive phase of the program.

The phase offered them continued learning opportunities, a fully funded immersive experience in Abuja, laptop enablement, and 90 days of group mentorship.

Briefing newsmen, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, founder of KSH foundation, said the mentorship would give the girls support, tools, gadgets and capital to run small businesses.

Halilu, who is the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), said: “The whole idea of the programme is to give young people mentorship support, tools and gadget, and a little bit of capital, to run one or two small businesses, and it doesn’t matter if they fail.

“The idea is for them to get the needed experience by pairing them up with mentors to see how people run businesses in the real world so that they are encouraged and given support.”

On his advice to the girls, he said: “They should take this seriously. It’s not an easy thing to be selected out of so many Nigerians, given an opportunity; a lot of money has been spent to train them. Mentors have given them their time. They shouldn’t take it for granted.”
