A former speaker of Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, is to be turbaned on Friday as Turakin Rano by the Emir of Rano, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa.

A representative of Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rurum will by this turbaning become a senior council member and kingmaker in the emirate.

The four other personalities to be turbaned alongside the new Turaki include Rt. Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa as Sardaunan Rano, retired Justice Wada Umar Rano as Madakin Rano, Alhaji Adda’u Isa Rano as Magajin-Garin Rano and Dr Yahaya Isa Bunkure as Makaman Rano.

Rano emirate is one of the four new emirates that were carved out from the old Kano emirate by the Ganduje-led administration sometime in November 2019. The late Emir of Rano, Alhaji Tafida Abubakar Ila ll was the first emir of Rano after the emirate’s creation.

The former speaker and chairman House Committee on Pension is the first person to be conferred with the title since the creation of the emirate two years ago.

Some residents of Rano town who spoke to Daily Trust on the turbaning of the new Turaki expressed confidence that the traditional ruler will not disappoint the governor, emir of Rano, traditional institution and the people of Kano State as a whole.

One of the residents, Murtala Muhammad Sani, popularly known as Murtala P.A, said the appointment of Rurum as Turaki is a well-deserved one, noting that the man had played a significant role in the creation of the four additional emirates in Kano.

Sani recalled that the four emirates were created when he was speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, saying the man that contributed immensely to the creation of the emirate would surely do the same for its progress.

“The former speaker knows the importance of the emirate and that was why he actively participated in its creation. So, I am confident the new Turaki will do everything within his power to see the emirate he facilitated, progresses.

“He will work tirelessly for the overall development of not only Rano Emirate but the traditional institution as a whole. The man who does so many things for the progress of the emirate when he was not holding any traditional title will surely do more now that he is occupying an important position in the emirate.

“I am therefore calling on the people of the emirate to rally round the new Turaki to move the emirate to greater heights. His success in discharging this task lies on the people. If he succeeds the credit will go to them and if otherwise, they will share the blame. God forbid,” he concluded.

On his part, a resident Muhammad Auwal Rano said the appointment of Rurum as Turakin Rano would be an added advantage to the people of the area as, according to him, the additional responsibility would encourage the former speaker to bring more development to the area.

He said: “The former speaker is a patriotic son of Rano emirate and has brought a lot of development to the area. So, wearing an additional cap by this man will be an added advantage for us to enjoy more goodies from him.

“The new Turaki is the kind of person that always wants to solve the problems of his people. When he was speaker, he did a lot for his constituents, after he moved to the National Assembly he continued with the good work and I am sure this time around he will do more to please his subjects.

“He is always with his people. He never abandons them because he moves to a higher position, be it political or whatever. So, I can assure my people that Rurum will use his position as Turakin Rano to add value to the lives of his people.”

Another resident, Malam Musa Ibrahim, described the choice of the former speaker for the title as a well-calculated decision, noting that the man that cared about the wellbeing of his people deserved the gesture.

He added that “the newly turbaned traditional title holder will surely serve the emirate beyond expectations. He has served his people in different capacities before his recent appointment as Turaki, therefore, his recent appointment will be an added opportunity for him to serve his people in another way.

“As a politician who has been dealing with different people for decades, manning the affairs of his subjects as a traditional ruler will not be a difficult task for him. It will rather ginger him to do more for his people.”

For Alhaji Kabiru Idris, Rano Emirate has made the right choice by appointing the former speaker as a member of its council and kingmaker, saying “the man will never let the emirate down. He will use his influence to uplift its status within and outside Kano.

“All the man needs now is our prayers for Allah’s guidance. As far as experience and competence are concerned, I do not have any doubt that the new Turaki will excel in discharging his assigned duties as a council member and kingmaker in Rano Emirate.

“I am, therefore, congratulating the people of Rano Emirate for having Rurum as the first Turaki in the emirate. For the appointee, I am appealing to him to consider his appointment as a challenge and do his best to discharge the confidence reposed in him by the emirate.”
