Food security: German government empowers peasant farmers in Adamawa

The German government, in partnership with the Adamawa State and NURU Nigeria, is making strides in building community resilience and empowering peasant farmers across three local government areas of the state.

Through their collaborative efforts, positive results have been achieved in fostering economic growth, promoting sustainable agriculture, and increasing access to financial services.

German Embassy representative, Susan Schroder has expressed her satisfaction with the progress made so far.

She explained that farming activities in Gombi, Hong, and Michika Local Government Areas of Adamawa State have been severely impacted by insurgency, posing a threat to food security and the livelihoods of the people.

Susan said that the efforts of the German government and their partners are helping to address these issues and improve the lives of the affected communities.

The situation for peasant farmers in the affected areas has been dire, with many having to travel long distances to neighboring communities to process the little produce they are able to harvest.

However, this narrative is beginning to change with the intervention of the German government’s funds towards building resilience of peasant farmers across the three selected LGAs.

The project funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with the Adamawa State government, is being implemented by NURU Nigeria, is geared towards engagement youths and women in agricultural activities as a means of livelihood.

Recently, German authorities, state government officials, and critical stakeholders converged on Gombi to distribute post-harvest and processing equipment to peasant farmer organizations in the select LGAs.

These efforts are aimed at improving the productivity and efficiency of the farmers, reducing their costs, and increasing their access to markets.

The Managing Director of NURU Nigeria, Amy Gaman, has expressed her satisfaction with the NGO’s close collaboration with IDPs, returnees, and host communities to foster economic growth, promote sustainable agriculture, and increase access to financial services.

These efforts are critical to building resilience and prosperous communities in the affected areas.

One of the remarkable achievements of the project is the representation of women, who constitute 65% of all aspects of the activity which has represented a significant shift towards gender equity, inclusion, and empowerment in the affected communities.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who was represented by the Commissioner of the State Ministry of Entrepreneurship, James Iliya, commended the initiative. The governor highlighted the importance of the project in addressing the challenges faced by peasant farmers in the affected areas and improving their livelihoods.

Commissioner James Iliya emphasized that fighting poverty and hunger is a collective effort, and he commended the German government for the initiative which is making a positive impact on the lives of the people in the affected areas. He further noted that the facilities provided by the project will enable the farmers to process their agricultural produce more efficiently.

German Embassy representative Susan Schroder expressed her satisfaction with the partnership, describing it as the beginning of a new dawn in economic productivity of the state and increased income for the farmers, enabling them to secure a better future for their households.

The partnership is fostering sustainable agriculture, promoting economic growth, and increasing access to financial services, all of which are critical to building resilient communities. The German government is committed to continuing to support such initiatives in the future.

Susan Schroder expressed her satisfaction that the funds provided by the German government are being put to proper use towards improving the livelihood of the farmers. She further emphasized the importance of such collaborations in addressing the challenges faced by peasant farmers in the affected areas.

Some of the beneficiaries of the project have lauded the efforts of the donors and implementing partners for giving them a sense of belonging. They expressed their gratitude for the support they have received, which has enabled them to improve their productivity and income.
