The Caritas Nigeria (Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria) has urged Nigerians to adopt eco-friendly culture such as alternative energy sources, paperless workflow, and reduction in use of fossil oil.

This is contained in the communique of a two-day summit on ‘Synod of Synodality in the Context of Laudato Si: The Nigerian Experience’ organized by the Caritas Nigeria and the Church and Society Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN).

The summit among others was to analyze the impact of environmental decadence in Nigeria and the need for collaborative efforts to address the challenges occasioned by these ills.

The communique signed by Episcopal Chairman, Church and Society, and Metropolitan of Lagos Archdiocese, Most Rev. Martins Adewale, called for an all-inclusive engagement in addressing the many ecological challenges where the legislators will promulgate ecologically friendly laws, government agencies will implement ecological sane policies, schools adopt ecologically sustainable courses while the church is to embrace ecological spirituality.

“Catechesis on ecological sustainability should be adopted to encourage families to live out the values that care for the earth and promote healthy environmental culture even within our homes. Such cultures include tree planting, energy conservation, use of biodegradable materials.

“There is dire need to address the socio-economic inequalities among occupants of the earth as a means to arrest the consumerist approach to existence. Conversations on this should be advanced by local, regional and international governments to adopt policies that will bridge the inequality gaps and encourage climate justice for all.”

The summit also said that the health sector must be strengthened to serve the need of all creation by encouraging alternative medical services and products other than inorganic ones.

“Organizations should adopt Eco-friendly working culture such as alternative energy sources, paperless workflow, and the reduction in the use of fossil oil,” it said.
