Floods: 280 killed, 180 LGAs affected – NEMA

The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar, has noted that about 180 local government areas have been affected by flood this year so far.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja when she officially received 18,653 bags of 10kg rice donated by Bank of Industry (BOI) and 1,696 cartons of humanitarian relief items donated by Government of UAE to support the Nigerian government in assisting flood victims and IDPs, she mentioned that the flood affected over one million persons, with over 600,000 persons displaced from their homes.

She noted that governments at various levels were trying to mitigate the impact of disasters in all ramifications and the donations by both the Bank of Industry (BOI) and the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had come at the right time and would go a long way in complementing the efforts of the Federal Government of Nigeria in providing succour to persons affected by flood and other disasters across the country.
