Flooding: Work begins on Ganaja road in Kogi

Respite has come for motorists and residents of Ganaja as the Kogi State government deployed equipment to site to open up the Ganaja Village road that had been impassable for weeks due to flooding.

North Central Trust reports that the road, which serves as a major passage route linking the north with the eastern parts of the country, was overtaken by flood since the last one month, trapping several trucks and cars along the road leading to Ajaokuta and the eastern part of the country.

Already, heavy duty equipment has been moved to site to commence work on the failed section just as the alternative route through the 500 Housing Units Estate is being graded for easy access during the rehabilitation works.

Our correspondent reports that work commenced yesterday as the Kogi State Ministry of Works and Housing, through the  Kogi State Road Maintenance Agency handling the repairs, mobilised to site.

As at time of filing this report, almost all vehicles trapped had been evacuated while filling of the sections with stones and evacuating of failed soil were ongoing.

Kogi State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Abubakar Ohere, in an interview shortly after moving to the site, commended residents of the community and motorists for their patience and understanding.

The commissioner said that the state government was putting the palliative work in place in view of the strategic location of the road to the state and nation.

He said even though the road  belongs to the federal government, the state government has to intervene in view of the important role the road has on the economy of the country.

The commissioner thanked motorists and the people of Ganaja for enduring the hardship faced in the last few weeks and hailed the support of the community, describing the synergy as worthy of emulation.
