As part of efforts to mitigate flood, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has charged residents and environmental stakeholders on proper waste management and flood preparedness in Edo State.
Head of the NEMA’s Benin Operation Office, Dahiru Yusuf, gave the charge in Benin during a sensitisation programme on proper waste management and flood preparedness, organised in collaboration with the Edo State Emergency Management Agency.
He said the event was to sensitise residents, communities, and environmental stakeholders across the state, especially those in flood prone LGAs with a view to mitigate against flood and achieve cleaner environment.
He said, “Some LGAs will experience flood as predicted by NiMet, we are sensitising the people on effective waste management and flood preparedness so that we can minimise its impact.”

He urged the representatives of various communities in the LGAs to take the message down to their various communities for effective flood preparedness and proper waste management.
On her part, the Director, Edo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Helen Obayuwna, noted that flood always leads to loss of life, livelihood, displacement, damage infrastructure, contaminated water, disruption of school calendar, among others.
In his presentation, Frank Inenemhoi, Head, Environmental and Climate change Desk, Edo State Ministry of Health, identified inadequate manpower and funding, lack of political will, lack of appropriate technology, among others as challenges inhibiting proper waste management and flood preparedness.
