An aged woman died, many others were injured and several houses destroyed as a result of multiple flooding that ravaged Jakusko Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The flooding occurred on two occasions following heavy downpour in the town few days ago.

Some members of the community were earlier featured on Kanem Trust decrying lack of roads and a drainage system in the town which contributed to the incessant flooding in the area.

A resident, Abba Aliyu, said people were in dire need of intervention.

He said several houses, farmlands, shops, foodstuff and other valuables worth millions of naira were lost and that people had become helpless.

He explained that, “After the first flood, few residents sold their assets to buy building materials in order to rehabilitate their houses despite the economic hardship.

“Unfortunately, as we were about renovating our houses another heavy rainfall came which aggravated the situation.

“We had no option than to pick our tools and clear water channels, but we could only do little.”

One of the residents, Hajara Mohammed, told Kanem Trust that she did not sleep anytime it rained due to the fear of flood.

She said, “Some parts of my room have collapsed and we are currently squatting with my two children in a dilapidated room.

“Government officials have assigned SEMA to come and assess our losses but they are yet to do anything.”

The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr Mohammed Goje, said the agency had assessed the level of damage and would intervene in due course.

The Chairman of Jakusko LGA, Abdullahi Ahmed Gwaya, did not respond to a call and an SMS sent to him on the incident.
