Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) in collaboration with Kano state government has begun dredging of the state’s metropolitan drainages as measures to avert flooding in the state.
Speaking during the flag-off of the exercise at Baban Gwari roundabout along Katsina road in the metropolis, state NEWMAP Project Coordinator Malam Musa Shu’aib said the project deemed it necessary to complement the state government’s efforts in reducing flood in the state which usually occurs at the rainy season.
“It is important to note that we have embarked on this excise at 16 different locations across the state capital to as a matter of prevention avert possible flooding. The Baban Gwari drainage is one of the major drainages that others are linked to,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Kano state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso said already the state government has commenced refuse evacuation from various areas across the state, adding that it is a step forward to ensure freedom from the flood this year.
