Kano State Government has embarked on annual clearing and desilting of drainages in the metropolis to prevent flooding as the rainy season sets in.
The exercise commenced at Jakara stream and Baban Gwari drainages.

Speaking during the commencement of the exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, said all major drainages in the metropolis should be desilted henceforth to avert flooding during the rainy season.
The commissioner noted that the programme is geared towards protecting the lives and properties of Kano residents which flooding may cause.
Dr. Getso called on the people to desist from dumping refuse inside drainages and in the middle of the road.
In their separate remarks, Muhammad Hamisu Danmatsaro and Umar Farouk Muhammad, who are the representatives of Jakara community, described the Jakara stream as a threat to the health and lives of the host community. They thanked the state government for the clean-up initiative.
