Flood: farmers urge FG to build new dams

Worried by the devastation caused by floods on farm produce in many states across the country, the president of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Farouk Mudi, yesterday urged the federal government to build new dams to check flooding.

He spoke in Abuja at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by Tinco Mobile Plc and AFAN, to address food insecurity.

Reflections on ‘vote trading’ in our elections

Mudi said: “These kinds of floods are preventable, but how? We, farmers, are handicapped. We cannot do that, but the federal government can. We’re calling on them.

“Based on what happened this year, we believe if nothing is being done, the one that’ll happen next year, only God knows, because it’s on the increase because of the silting of dams and waterways year in, year out.

“We need to distill the dams to have that water to use it during the dry season farming and many other things and now we’re leaving it to explode instead of collecting it to be used. The government has allowed it to explode and kill our people and economy.

“We’re appealing to the government to look at the budget and see how they can make other dams to save water so that we can use it and save the citizens from being affected.”
