A bridge linking Bida to Agaie, Lapai and Lambata in Niger State has been washed away by flood caused by torrential rainfall on Sunday, leaving travellers stranded.

The ever-busy Bida-Minna Road was also washed off.

The incident, which happened few kilometres from the National Cereal Institute, Badegi, denied people access to locations along that stretch of the road.

The state government had commenced repairs of the damaged portion of the Minna-Bida road, with a directive to heavy duty vehicles to stay off it pending the completion of work.

The government had said the road had outlived its lifespan and needed to be totally reconstructed.

Daily Trust reports that the state government had sought facilities for the dualization of the 86 kilometre road from the Islamic Development Bank.

Permanent Secretary, the state’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructural Development, Abubakar Sadiq Balarabe, said discussion on the matter had reached an advance stage between the bank and the government.
