Flood: Bayelsa SEMA confirms 96 deaths, over 1.2m displaced persons

The Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed a total of 96 deaths during the 2022 flood disaster that ravaged the state.

The State Emergency Management Agency in an official data of the flood situation released on Monday, also disclosed that one million two hundred and ten thousand, one hundred and eighty-three (1,210,183) people were displaced from their houses, while a total of 1,344,014 persons are directly affected by this year’s flood in the state.

Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency, Hon. Walamam Igrubia, who confirmed the figure to newsmen in Yenagoa, said the collation of data from the field was still ongoing while stating that the heavy flood affected a number of farmlands, school buildings, health structures and other facilities.

He said the flooding affected several communities across the entire 8 Local Government Areas of the State.

He said the preliminary reports and data available to SEMA and other agencies indicated that Bayelsa State remained the most flood impacted among states in the country.

The SEMA boss stated that he was delighted to hear that the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Farouq, has now acknowledged the fact that Bayelsa State is in the league of the top ten most impacted states.
