Fleeing driver arrested, arraigned for killing 5 school girls in Ogun

A hit and run driver, Ayobami Shoyoye, who allegedly killed five female school girls in an auto crash in Abeokuta, Ogun state, was on Monday arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Isabo.

Daily Trust recalls that the victims – all female – died when an unmarked Toyota Avensis car crashed into the roadside along Abiola way, Olorunsogo in Abeokuta metropolis, killing five and injuring three.

The driver had bolted away shortly after he committed the alleged offence only to be arrested by the police.

However, the Police today arraigned the suspect before Magistrate Basirat Adebowale on a three-count charge of dangerous driving, causing untimely death and driving without drivers licence. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Hammed Moshood, told the court that Shoyoye drove the car in a dangerous manner and caused the untimely death of five school girls.

The victims, according to him, are Rokibat Olorode (18); Halimo Adeyemi (18); Ayisat Ajibabi (19); Mistura Hammed (18), all students of the Ogun State Government-owned Federal College, Olobe Idi Aba, Abeokuta as well as one 13 year-old Odunayo Akingbade.

He disclosed that the defendant also injured Lateef Sodalubi (24); Sheriff Yekini (18) and Yusuf Akingbade (11) who were said to be in critical conditions at Federal Medical Centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta.

Prosecutor submitted that the offences allegedly committed are contrary to and punishable under sections 5, 6(1) and section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act Cap F:13 laws of the federation of Nigeria 2004.

In his ruling, Magistrate Adebowale granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum.

The case, however, has been adjourned till February 22 for hearing.
