First ‘Sambisa’ music video made me famous – Yamu Baba

‘Sambisa’ is a hilarious musical video that caught the attention of viewers because its star turned his back on the girl he loves once she insists, they must get married in the dreaded Sambisa forest well-known as a terrorist camp.

Ibrahim Yamu Baba, popularly known as Yamu Baba or Angon Sambisa (Sambisa groom) said his love song, ‘Sambisa’, has made him more popular than he was.

The ‘Sambisa’ music video, which features Baba and Zainab Usman Aliyu, became a hit in 2019.

It shows Baba asking a woman out, only to later run away when she agrees and insists the wedding should take place in Sambisa forest where Boko Haram terrorists are known to have camped for a period of time.

The duo built on the success of the first episode and Sambisa part two and three were subsequently released.

Speaking with Daily Trust, Baba said he has been an actor for a long time and also sings in Kannywood.

Originally from Biu in Borno State, he was born and brought up in Jos.

“Even though I have been acting and singing for a long time, this ‘Sambisa’ video is what made me more popular.

“People are now calling me Angon Sambisa (Sambisa groom) because of it,” he said.

Asked who his role models are, Baba said, “I don’t have any specific role model in music.

“I listen to all genres, and to God be the glory, I can sing in all of them.

“But I’m concentrating more on themes around politics through comedy.

“On aspect of film making, Ali Nuhu is my role model.

“I spent about 15 years in the Kannywood industry, where I have acted in many films like ‘Rabin Raina’, ‘Bakin Mulki’, ‘Ana Muslim’ and many more movies like ‘Gaushi and Sarkakiya’ that will soon be released.”

But Baba admitted that he did not sing the song ‘Sambisa’, but simply featured in the video.

Asked about his preference, Baba said he likes to act and sing and his main concern is how to make his fans happy.

“But to be frank, music brings more money into my account, especially with the release of the ‘Sambisa’ video.

“We got more than one million views within a very short time, and since then, any video we do gets many views and positive comments.”
