No fewer than 14 big stalls were yesterday burnt at the Zangon Kanwa Market in Gashua, Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The market head, Mohammed Aminami (Sarkin Zango), said the cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained as there was no electricity supply at the market.
He expressed appreciation to the fire service and other officials who responded on time and to control the situation.
“I am grateful that no one lost his life, but I am sure that the 14 stalls and properties we lost are worth over N20 million,” he said.
He urged government and community leaders to assist the affected people with all necessary support.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said on its Facebook page: “We commiserate with victims of the Gashua fire, as directed by Gov. Mai Mala Buni, SEMA will respond accordingly to bring succor to the affected individuals.” SEMA officials however said the number of stalls affected was 20, and not 14.
