Fire on Thursday morning razed several shops and houses at Wurukum axis of Makurdi metropolis in Benue State.
Witnesses said the fire, which started at about 9am, destroyed property worth millions of naira with residents attributing it to a gas cylinder explosion.
The affected buildings, near the state library, are residential houses, as well as shops.
However, the intervention of men of the state fire service saved some property.
The Director of the fire service, Engr Donald Ikyaaza, said he liaised with the Federal Fire Service to put out the fire.
Ikyaaza, however, said he was yet to know the cause of the fire.
