Nine yam farms along Bishiri Road in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State have been gutted by fire.
The fire affected even the yam barns nearby.
The incident happened few days ago, precisely 22 January 2024, according to some of the heartbroken farmers.
The affected farmers are yet to determine the cause of the fire which has rendered them economically strapped.

A source close to one of the farmers, Stella James, said “The entire investments of my elder sister have been wiped away within minutes.
“We don’t know what would have caused the fire although this is dry season. This has added to her troubles. She spent her time, energy and resources to build the yam barns.”
Reacting in an interview, director general of SEMA, State Emergency Management Agency, James Anam, who resumed duties in November 2023, advised that victims of fire and other natural disasters should always keep his office informed of such incidents for early response.
But commissioner for humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in the State, Dr Helen Isamoh-Egodo, sympathized with the nine farmers, saying the immense damage caused by the fire will intensify the economic hardship of the victims.
In a statement, she said “I understand that these yam barns are not just a source of livelihood but also represent hard work, dedication and hope for our people.
“It breaks my heart to see the fruits of your labour reduced to ashes in a matter of moments.
“We have already mobilised a team of experts to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance to those affected. Our priority is to ensure that you have the necessary resources to restart your yam cultivation and regain your economic stability. We will work tirelessly to provide financial aid, agricultural inputs, and technical support to help you get back on your feet.”
