Another fire yesterday destroyed several shops at a section of the popular Balogun market in Lagos Island.
Traders ran from one point to another, trying to salvage their wares. This came four months after fire destroyed another section of the market.
Yesterday’s fire affected shops at the Gbajumo Street side of the market. Though there was no report of death, some people in a bid to put out the fire sustained injuries.
Witnesses said the fire started in one of the shops from an electrical fault and spread to other parts of the market for several hours.
Some of the traders blamed the spread of the fire on the inability of the fire service to respond quickly, but fire service officials said they received the distress call very late.
Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, said two fire trucks were deployed to combat the flames.
