Former acting governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has emerged winner in the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) primary election in Adamawa State.
Announcing the result on Monday, the PDP returning officer, Adamu Shuaibu said the former acting governor won 1,656 votes to emerge winner.
Chief Protocol Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Ambassador Jamil Zubairu scored 465 votes to become second in the race while former governor Bala Nggilari got 76 votes.
Others are Barrister Aliyu Ahmad who scored 8 votes and Dr Umar Ardo who got one vote. Ardo had announced his withdrawal before the election but the election committee said they were not informed about his decision to pull out.
Shuaibu said 28invalid votes were recorded in the election he described as free and fair, commending delegates for orderly conduct at the venue.
Daily Trust had reported that on Sunday, former deputy governor, Sa’ad Tahir, Adamu Modibbo, and Ardo withdrew from the race in protest, citing electoral fraud and vote buying.
Addressing delegates after his victory, Fintiri promised to address myriads of problems facing the state if elected governor in 2019.
Meanwhile, Governor Muhammadu Jibrilla expressed dismay over the postponement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election to Thursday following complaints from some aspirants, advising his supporters to remain calm.
