FIFA World Cup Play-off: Ghana hold Nigeria to a goalless draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Black Stars of Ghana have played out a barren draw in the first leg of their FIFA World Cup Play-off on Friday at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana.

Nigeria’s hope of getting an away win from the spot was dashed after VAR overruled a decision to award the visitors a penalty in the closing stages of the second half.

A review of the decision found that Ghana midfielder, Iddrisu Baba, was fouled before he handled the ball in the penalty area.

Ghana came closest to breaking the deadlock with Nigerian goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, pulling off a superb save to deny Fatahu Ishaku in the first half.

Nigeria now hold the advantage going into the second leg of the play-off.

The reverse leg is set for the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Tuesday, 29th March from 6pm.

The winner over two legs will earn one of Africa’s five tickets to the 22nd FIFA World Cup finals, scheduled for 14th November – 18th December this year in Qatar.
