FG, UNEP to provide energy-efficient cooling solutions in Nigeria

The federal government and the United Nations Environment Programme  (UNEP) have said they are working towards providing energy-efficient cooling solutions across Nigeria.

This was disclosed when the members of the National Technical Committee of the Scaling-up Energy-Efficiency and Climate-Friendly Cooling project met in Abuja.

The committee, a collaboration between the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the UNEP, with financial support from the Clean Cooling Collaborative (CCC), met to deliberate and review the project’s work plan for 2024.

It said the meeting aimed to propel the provision of energy-efficient and climate-friendly cooling solutions across Nigeria.

Speaking at the meeting, the director-general of ECN, the implementing institution for the project, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, emphasised that the primary objective was to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient air conditioners with climate-friendly, low-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants in residential, commercial and public buildings.

He said the meeting marked a crucial step in the implementation of the sustainable cooling project, emphasising the commitment of both ECN and UNEP to advancing climate-friendly solutions in Nigeria.

By fostering collaboration among experts and stakeholders, he said the committee would ensure a comprehensive and sustainable approach to meeting climate targets in the country.
