FG tasks youths on democratic process commitment

The Federal Government has charged Nigerian youths to show commitment in the democratic process of the nation since they are the future of the country’s democracy.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the call at the ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) Democracy Convening event organised by Activista Nigeria, themed, ‘The Nigeria We Want! Our Dreams, Now or Actions!’ on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said the event was apt because this was the time for Nigerian youths to take positive action for development saying, “Nobody will take action for us”.

He noted that the event which aims to empower young people in promoting democracy, advocating for political reforms, and social justice.

He said, “As you convene in the spirit of inclusion and shared responsibilities as our commitment to Nigeria, you should try to contribute to the development of the country and be tools for viable change.

“As we gather here today, let us know that democracy is not a static institution it is a dynamic entity contracting the body to its ideas, let us turn to dialogue in our differences and we should know that we are one nation desiring for peaceful, prosperous and a just Nigeria.”

He urged Nigerian youths to engage openly, generate ideas openly and proffer solutions to building a stronger Nigeria for generations to come.

“You are about to be the future of Nigeria your voices, actions and commitment to the democratic process is already shaping our Federation,” Olawande said.

In his goodwill message, ActionAid Nigeria’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu said through the combined efforts of this alliance, they can work to address barriers to civic participation, especially among youth and women, and strive to create a political climate where every voice is heard and valued.

Mamedu said the Democracy Convening’s ambitious vision demands not only passion but sustained commitment.

“We stand confident in the capacity of Nigeria’s youth to lead this transformative movement and pledge ActionAid’s continued support. The resolve and commitment of these young leaders empower us all, reinforcing our collective pursuit of a just and equitable Nigeria.

“This gathering holds immense potential to reimagine and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic landscape at a critical moment. Currently, our country ranks 123rd out of 167 in the 2023 Global Democracy Index, reflecting persistent challenges to democratic freedoms, civic engagement, and accountability.

“It is inspiring to witness the resilience, courage, and determination of young leaders stepping up to shape a new future,” Mamedu said.

He said that since the initial discussions in 2023, when the alliance first shared the vision for Democracy Convening, ActionAid Nigeria has fully embraced this initiative as it aligns with our enduring commitment to social justice and democratic values.

He said that given Nigeria’s record-low voter turnout of just 29% in the 2023 general elections and an ongoing struggle to achieve robust political representation and transparency, the Convening provides a timely intervention.
