The federal government has been enjoined to make full budgetary allocation to family planning in the 2019 budget in line with the commitments it signed to support Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) Global Strategy.
The Chairman Board of Trustees of the Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR) Dr Aminu Magashi, made the call in Abuja during a stakeholders validation meeting on the EWEC Global Strategy and Family Planning 2020 commitments.
The federal government through the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, had during the July, 2017 Summit on family planning in London committed to contribute $4 million annually from 2017 to 2020 to be combined with contributions for the public sector family planning programmes.
However, Dr Magashi said instead of the $4million, only N500 million which is equivalent to $1.5 million was allocated to family planning in the 2018 budget leaving a funding gap of $2.5 million.
Deputy chair, Health Committee, House of Representatives, Mohammad Usman, said part of the issues on the release of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund is the failure to capture it in the statutory transfers schedule.
Commissioner of Health, Niger state, Dr Mustapha Jibrin, said the Basic Health Care Provision Fund would go a long way to strengthen primary healthcare services.
