FG probes alleged sale of Nigerians’ data for N100

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has responded to reports that his National Identification Number (NIN) slip was purchased online for N100 from a now-defunct website.

Tijani said on Wednesday in a post on X that he has contacted the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who oversees the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

He assured the public that both the ministry and NIMC are addressing the issue.

Although the minister did not confirm or deny the claims made by Paradigm Initiative, a civil society organization that uncovered the sale of Nigerians’ data online, he mentioned that the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched a thorough investigation into the alleged breach.

Last week, Paradigm Initiative raised concerns about the sale of Nigerians’ data, including NIN and Bank Verification Number (BVN), on a website for as low as N100.

The organization’s Executive Director, Mr. Gbenga Sesan, claimed that this data was sourced directly from government databases.

The NIMC has denied any data breach on its platform, asserting that it has implemented robust measures to protect the nation’s database from cyber threats, ensuring it remains secure and world-class.
