The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development said it was working assiduously with Plan International and other development partners towards addressing the challenges of menstrual health and hygiene management (MHHM) in the country.
The assistant director of the health desk of the ministry, Mariam F. Shaibu, disclosed this yesterday during a national dialogue on menstrual health and hygiene management organised by the ministry in collaboration with Plan International and other partners in Abuja.
Shaibu said the challenges facing menstrual hygiene in the country include non-availability of water in some schools, lack of separate toilets for boys and girls, poor disposal systems, and difficulty in assessing good menstrual products, among others.
She urged young girls to open up to their parents and friends whenever they experience their periods and ask questions for proper menstrual hygiene management.

Plan International Nigeria’s Director of Programme Quality and Innovation, Helen Idiong, stressed the need to eliminate stigmatisation surrounding menstruation among young adolescents and women.
The co-chair of the dialogue, Elizabeth Jeiyol, said the gathering was a commitment towards collective contribution for an action that would be used to eradicate menstrual poverty.
